Family Violence Prevention and Early Intervention Programs

Cultura’s Family Violence Primary Prevention & Early Intervention program provides information and support to groups and individuals from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds living in the Barwon region.

Cultura provides information sessions to enable understanding of Human Rights, Australian Law, Respectful Relationships, and gender equity.

Early intervention and referral

The Early intervention and referral program aims to understand the unique needs, experiences and situations of culturally diverse women and responds in an appropriate manner. Each support is tailored to the needs of the community member seeking support.

The program is designed to increase women’s self-esteem and empower them to make choices to ensure safety for themselves and their children. Referrals are made to relevant services in partnership with each woman. Women are supported to build their capacity for greater understanding, education and skill-building.

To make a referral please contact Cultura Community Hub on 5260 6000

Parenting in the New Culture Program

Parenting in a New Culture is a partnership between Cultura and City of Greater Geelong, Regional Parenting Service for parents from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. This program aims to build social networks and increase the capacity of participants to be more confident parents and to engage more broadly in the wider community. The program has seen many families join over the years and the benefits for these families have been ongoing. New members to the groups are always welcome. There are two existing parenting programs at Cultura:

  • Parenting program for Karen/Karenni women-Wednesdays fortnightly 6:00-8:00 pm

Dad’s Groups

Cultura has programs for men from Afghan, Karen and Karenni backgrounds.

The content of these programs are codesigned with each group.  They are conversation-based and aim to build social networks and increase the capacity of participants to settle well into life in Australia, to have respectful relationships, be more confident parents and to engage more broadly in the wider community.

Mental Health & Wellbeing

The Cultura Multicultural Mental Health & Wellbeing Program provides information and support for individuals and families from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. Content promotes physical and emotional wellbeing, raises awareness about mental health issues and services available and creates social inclusion opportunities for new arrival communities.

The Multicultural Mental Health & Wellbeing program partners with Mental Health services and advocates for culturally responsive services.

Hope Community Garden

Cultura’s Hope Community Garden is at the center of many of Cultura’s programs. On any given day, people are working their own plots, sharing knowledge and techniques, planting seedlings, harvesting vegetables, and creating the freshest of multicultural dishes. Located at Cultura’s Northern Hub in Norlane, the Hope Community Garden is a 1.5-acre garden that serves a range of multicultural communities, including those from refugee backgrounds and people seeking asylum. It is a space of inclusion and opportunity, and a source of nourishment and hope for multicultural communities in Geelong. A variety of programs are delivered in the garden. Cultura aims to share practical skills and knowledge about growing, harvesting and preparing food, and to provide opportunities for tangible connection to community, and engagement with other local services.

We are always looking for helping hands in the garden, or for new members to join. If you are interested in volunteering in the garden, or would like to become a member, please follow the links below:
